Light, capture, repeat

ABOUT ME
Hello!I'm Steve Roy Smith. My love of photography began in the 1980s while I was studying at art college in Swindon. One of our photography tutors challenged us to build our own pinhole cameras, and that simple project changed everything. Standing in the darkroom and watching my first image slowly appear in the developer tray felt thrilling. In that moment, I was hooked.

Not long afterwards, I bought a second hand Ricoh film camera fitted with a 50mm lens. It wasn't the most expensive camera (£50), but it became my constant companion. I spent countless hours exploring, learning about light, composition and timing. Photography quickly became far more than a hobby – it became a way of seeing the world.

My photography journey.

Once I pick up my camera I’m always looking for the potential images and anything my quirky mind finds interesting and beautiful..

Life moved on, and photography occasionally took a back seat, when time was at a minimum. However, during stressful times I have always revisited its calming effect. Walking along the River Thames and photographing the boats moored on the water gave me the stillness and lack of stress in my life that I find comforting. The gentle movement of the river, the changing light and the quiet atmosphere helped me reconnect with myself and brought a sense of mindfulness that calmed my soul.

I find the process of taking a photo addictive, once I pick up my camera I’m always seeing potential images I can make. It’s an all consuming process.

Photography is an important passion in my life. It allows me to slow down, observe and appreciate the beauty that often goes unnoticed. Every photograph is a small reflection of a moment, a mood or a memory. Trying to capture the fleetingness of light and reflections is a constant challenge. One second before or after that image will not exist.I would love to hear your thoughts on my photography work. So please feel free to drop me a line. Your comments and reflections are always welcome.
